Ebbed Tide, Millbrook Chapel of Rest, Cornwall, 2025
A site specific sound and embroidery installation set within the Chapel of Rest at Millbrook’s burial ground
In 2023 Harlow wrote a poetic novella titled Ebbed Tide, a historical fiction set across locations in Rame, London and Bermuda. The tidal, rhythmic nature of the ocean is reflected in the circular story, which goes back and forth in time. The novella considers the weaving of life, death and fate – exploring themes of synchronicity and spirituality. Read Ebbed Tide here.
This exhibition presented a new audio adaptation of Ebbed Tide madeby Harlow. Featuring narration by actor, sound director (and Catholic Priest) Marc Powell, who also contributed to the score. Responsive harp interludes, composed and performed by Hannah Koegler, punctuate the narration. Field recordings of the natural environment, made at Rame by Harlow and Koegler, are interwoven into the soundscape. Recordings made by Harlow of her Aeolian Harp underscore the piece. The Aeolian Harp is an ancient instrument which is played solely by the wind, producing harmonic frequencies. Harlow’s Aeolian Harp is made of walnut wood which was reclaimed from an old Pennsylvanian church. The two hour sound work was edited by Harlow with assistance from Ben Vince, who also mixed and mastered it. The score samples ‘Call of the Wind Spirits’ by Almusic34 from Free Music Archive.
Ebbed Tide aired on Resonance FM during the exhibition dates. Listen to the full audio adaptation below.

Grey Market, Art Night Open, 2019. Supported by Art Night. Grey Market focuses on the verbal interactions that occur within street markets. The second re-iteration celebrated local stories, unique characters and the sense of community within Walthamstow Market.
Harlow embedded herself in the market in the run up to Art Night, working for free for stallholders in return for recording the daily conversations. She operated a stall, swapping printed bag editions in return for market users recalling daily anecdotes and memories of the market. These interactions informed the script for Grey Market, performed by Harlow, her ‘duplicates’ and two market traders.

Polyester Breeze, solo show at The Telfer Gallery, Glasgow, 2017
‘Polyester Breeze’ took inspiration from DVD only mockbuster Aliens versus Avatars, found on a market stall for one pound. The multi media installation of sculptures and printed material included cast and modelled replicas of street rubbish resembling molten, oozing outer-space junk.
Alongside sculptural elements, a knock off film made by Harlow was presented on multiple TV screens. The film work, a knock off of an earlier work ‘Grey Market’ stars traders from London’s Bethnal Green Road Market alongside the artist and members of the public and features soundtrack and dialogue ripped from Aliens versus Avatars.
A small number of limited editions of the artists’ film were available to purchase for one pound at the Barras Market. These satellite editions were circulated by traders at the Barras Market labeled as Alien versus Avatars DVDs – a knock off of a knock off blending seamlessly into the daily market action.
